The YouTube channel Visual Venture recently published a video summarizing the preliminary findings and evidence of what is happening to current children when they have been allowed to have unrestricted screen time with tablets and other "smart" devices: How Internet Brain Rot Destroyed Gen Alpha.
These preliminary studies have shown that this amount of unrestricted use of such devices not only stunts the psychological development of children, but literally stunts the physical development of the brain. It's highly likely that if this physical stunting is allowed to continue for long enough, the brain will never fully develop and the person will be mentally stunted for life.
The external symptoms of this developmental deficiency are numerous, and include things like extreme restlessness (when not using the devices), extreme prolonged temper tantrums (a three-hour flight where such a toddler was having a continuous extreme temper tantrum during the entire flight is shown), difficulties learning to speak, and an extremely stunted attention span, among many other symptoms.
The video shows a teacher retelling how she, for example, once was going to show her class a 3-minute video, explained beforehand what the video would be about, showed the video, and then asked the students what the video was about. Not a single one could give an answer. Their extremely short attention span completely stopped them from being able to watch and understand a mere 3-minute video, and remember what it was about.
One symptom also discussed was a counterpart to the temper tantrums, and that was bouts of prolonged depression, when the devices were removed from them. That's right, 3-year-olds having prolonged bouts of outright depression. This is not something a 3-year-old should ever experience in a normal sane world.
Unsurprisingly, anti-social behavior and difficulties communicating and socializing are extremely common.
There is strong evidence that if allowed to go for long enough, this indeed can cause the brain to not fully physically develop, causing pretty much effectively permanent brain damage, and thus the person effectively becomes mentally handicapped for life in a sense, with a permanent lack of ability to concentrate, with a permanently short attention span, and difficulties learning, communicating and socializing, and being prone to anger fits, temper tantrums and bouts of depression.
I think it's about time to strictly ban children under a certain age to have access to these devices.
This is not as impossible and unthinkable as it might sound at first. After all, we already have such strict bans for alcohol, tobacco, and many other substances and devices that are completely legal and allowed for adults but absolutely banned from children.
Adding smart devices to this list is not hard.
