After the horrors of Nazi Germany were finally fully uncovered and exposed, not only did Germany, but in fact the majority of the western world, swear that this kind of thing would never be allowed to happen ever again. In other words, western society became hypervigilant about the raise of totalitarian regimes, of totalitarian extremism. "Never again!" is still the slogan of this "fascist watch" movement in Germany and elsewhere. "Never again" is written in many war memorials in Germany.
It seems, though, that most of the western world has become blind to the fact that totalitarian extremism don't just take over just like that, when nobody is looking. Totalitarian regimes, during the entire history of humanity, have always sold themselves as the solution to a great problem (real or fabricated) plaguing society. While it does sometimes happen, quite rarely do totalitarian regimens simply make a military coup and take over the country, beating its existing military and law enforcement forces. Most often these regimes come into power with the help of the citizens themselves. They get voted into power, or they take over via a popular revolution where a good majority of the citizens participate in. Totalitarian regimes always come disguised as the saviors of the country and its citizens: They promise that everything will become better once they gain absolute power, and that the problems plaguing society (real or fabricated) will be dealt with, and that in the end the country will become prosperous, peaceful and happy. Totalitarian regimes are almost always a wolf in sheep's clothes, (usually intentionally and knowingly) paving the road to hell with good intentions.
This is exactly what's happening right at this moment in almost the entirety of the west. A totalitarian ideology is taking over, and nobody is doing anything to stop it. People's rights and freedoms are being eroded and removed one after another. More and more restrictions are being put onto people's freedoms. Institution after institution, company after company, society after society, school after school is being infiltrated and taken over, and all dissenters purged. Totalitarian ideology, which categorically forbids all forms of dissent, is being enacted more and more. A big portion of the population is being vilified, demonized, dehumanized and attacked. Blatant, open and completely unashamed racist rhetoric and discrimination is at an all-time high, with little to no repercussions or backlash. Political violence is at a record high, with little to no repercussions.
"Never again!" has been forgotten.
It cannot be stressed enough how astonishingly dangerous this is. Time and again during human history this kind of ideology, when it finally gains absolute power, has resulted in millions of deaths. Millions of people massacred because of their politics, opinions or race. All the signs of this happening are there, in plain sight, and the world is ignoring it.
When they start restricting your freedom of speech, it's not going to end there. When they start spouting racist rhetoric against a large group of people, it's not going to end there. Anybody who thinks it's just going to end there is naive to the extreme. This is not just a slippery slope argument. It has been demonstrated time and again. History is repeating itself.
But this time it's even worse. That's because not only is a totalitarian ideology taking over, another different extremist totalitarian ideology is being imported en masse and unrestricted into the west, and their rhetoric is not being challenged and put into check either.
Nobody is doing anything about either one.
"Never again!" has been forgotten.
