What happened to TL;DR (ie. "teal deer")

When it comes to critics of the far leftist social justice ideology, the youtuber TL;DR (aka. "teal deer") was one of the bigger and more popular ones, with almost 200 thousand subscribers.

(When it comes to this topic, having over 100k subscribers makes you quite big. There are tons and tons of anti-leftist youtubers who have subscriber counts in the tens of thousands, sometimes even just the thousands. 100k makes you a popular youtuber, especially when it comes to critics of the far left.)

And he was that popular for a good reason: His videos were well researched and very well presented, and his points were always extremely good. Many of his videos dealt in detail with subjects that most other anti-SJW youtubers just don't bother doing much research about and only comment in passing (as an example, he made several videos debunking the so-called "pink tax", and they were really well researched and very well presented, and an absolute joy to watch.)

I cannot corroborate it (because he has either removed or privated every single video he ever uploaded), but to my recollection his videos typically got hundreds of thousands of view on average, some of them in the high hundreds of thousands.

Some years ago, however, he decided that youtube is a "censorious" platform that de-ranks videos critical of the left, and as a protest he stopped uploading to YouTube and moved to other alternative video sharing platforms. (He wrote a clear statement of this on his YouTube profile, making clear what had happened.) And not only did he stop uploading to YouTube, moreover he, for some reason I cannot really comprehend, either removed or privated every single video he had ever uploaded there, so nobody can watch them on YouTube ever again.

Do you know what I find the most mind-boggling and jarring about all this?

The fact that he is getting on average between 1000 and 3000 views per video on those alternative video sharing platforms. Only very few of his videos succeed in breaking that 3 thousand views mark.

On YouTube he was getting hundreds of thousands of views per video.

In other words, in order to protest the "censorious" nature of YouTube, he decided to cut his own viewership by about two orders of magnitude, moving to a more obscure platform where only a small fraction of his former viewers are following him anymore.

The huge, huge irony here is that he is way more successful in censoring himself than YouTube ever did. On YouTube he was reaching hundreds of thousands of people with each video. On the alternative platforms he is only reaching a few thousands. He is, for all intents and purposes, censoring himself, and doing so significantly more effectively than he claims YouTube does.

And this has been going on for quite many years now (I think three or four, at least). Has he noticed that his view counts have dropped like a lead balloon compared to what they were on YouTube, and did he learn from the mistake, regretted having left YouTube and returned (or at the very least started uploading to both YouTube and the other platforms)?

Nope. He is still actively uploading at regular intervals, but he stubbornly just outright refuses to upload anything to YouTube, even though he would have a significantly larger reach there. He refuses to learn from this mistake, and he just stubbornly continues to censor himself, because according to him YouTube is a "censorious" platform that he refuses to support.

(Yes, this post might have a slightly bitter tone, and it indeed is so, because I used to be quite a fan of his videos and an avid follower, but I haven't bothered going to those alternative platforms. If he doesn't want to upload to YouTube then so be it. It's a pity, but I just can't be bothered.)
