Boycotting companies is becoming unfeasible

I recently wrote a post about what to expect in the future if (and quite possibly when) the extreme regressive left succeeds in taking over society completely, including all possible levels of government, law enforcement and all services.

On a more immediate and slightly smaller scale, something that's already happening at an increasing speed, one consequence of the social justice ideology invading everything is that it has become less and less possible to just ignore it and escape it.

For many decades it used to be that if you disliked a particular company for something they were doing, for example for becoming too political and trying to shove their politics onto their customers, you could simply boycott them, not purchase any of their products or services, and go to the competition. For many decades these companies used to be a fringe minority, and there were plenty of competing companies that didn't do that and were completely viable alternatives.

However, we are very quickly becoming a society where this isn't possible anymore. More and more companies are virtue-signaling and starting to preach to their customers at an ever-increasing rate. Not only is company after company starting to do it, but they are also becoming bolder and more obnoxious about it by the day.

We are quickly becoming a society where you just can't boycott them and choose a competitor, because there is no competition on this. Less and less companies are staying neutral and not displaying identity politics front and center, virtue-signaling, and trying to shove their politics down your throat.

Quite soon there will be no alternatives. You'll simply have to endure it, because there's no choice. There are many services and products that you simply need, and you just can't avoid them, and we are becoming very quickly a world where you can't get them from neutral corporations.

You'll just have to endure the virtue-signaling and the preaching when you go to their websites or their stores, and when you purchase their products or services. You will simply have to support them monetarily, whether you want it or not, because there will be no choice. You cannot simply become a hermit living in the wilderness hunting for his own food.

Any complaints that you might file to those companies will fall to deaf ears. They will simply be ignored and you will be dismissed as a "bigot". Who knows, perhaps they will even ban you, because your money will be "dirty" to them.

Not a very happy future.

  1. I think this has been realized by some. Why else would American conservatives, for whom public ownership of anything is anathema, suddenly support nationalizing the likes of Twitter and Facebook?

    I'm personally against it, but since the government owns the public airwaves for Wi-Fi and mobile telephony, it could control their openness through regulation.

    As for physical goods, an expansion of public accommodation laws to include political beliefs would restrict companies from boycotting their customers (ironically, California's already does); but there's no standalone federal public accommodation law - only the implied rights from the Civil Rights Act - and realistically, only Republicans gaining 60 seats in the Senate would allow it to pass in today's environment.

While it would be hard in the short run for companies to choose their customers based on political opinions (especially in most European countries), I'm here more talking about these companies shoving their politics on your face, whether you like it or not. It's difficult to make expression of political opinions by companies illegal or restricted, as we are now wading into constitutional rights territory.

    2. Yeah, I don't disagree about it being irritating. But I think its less genuine belief on their part rather than self-interest. That doesn't demonstrate confidence in their market position, and not the attitude of a monopoly.
