An (at the time) upcoming video game by a quite unknown development company named TeamKill Media, the game itself being called Code Violet, raised some eyebrows some time ago because:
- it's purportedly a spiritual sequel to the popular "Dino Crisis" game (from 1999),
- the teaser trailers looked interesting and competent,
- the game would be a PS5 exclusive (which already felt a bit odd),
- and most prominently and what grabbed people's attention, the reasoning given by the developers for going PS5 exclusive.
And that reasoning? Direct quote:
"For those asking us about a PC version of Code Violet... the reason we are not bringing it to PC is we do not want anyone modding vulgar versions of the main character as well as other characters in the game. We hold our voice actresses and actors with high regard, as well as our artistic vision for the game and story and reject any form of destroying that with sexual mods. Making a joke out of our art and possibly tarnishing the reputation of our voice actresses and actors is not worth the extra money we can make."
Skeptics immediately jumped to the conclusion that this is, yet again, one of those "woke" game development companies virtue-signaling and pandering to the "modern audience", and that the game would likely, like is always the case with these types of companies, have a playable character model that's very dislikeable and has been deliberately uglified.
You can see that sentiment repeated over and over, particularly on videos of anti-woke commentators. And it makes sense: It does indeed sound like something that a "woke" far-leftist game development company would say.
And now that the official reviews are appearing, they are abysmal, giving the game atrocious scores and saying that it's absolute trash. Unsurprisingly, the anti-woke commentators are laughing at it and saying once again that pandering to the "modern audience" doesn't pay.
However, it turns out that it's actually not that simple, and all those commentators might actually be wrong, and this is actually not a case of a "woke" company trying to pander to the "modern audience".
Why? Well, exhibit A: The playable character of the game (wearing one of the many available costumes):
Doesn't look very "woke" and "pandering to the modern audience" to me. In addition, as far as I know, there's nothing in the game itself, or any other statements made by the development company, that would indicate that they are "woke" far-leftist activists.
The actual reason why the game is receiving abysmal scores and being completely trashed even by big-name publications (such as IGN), even publications that have for long been invaded by far-leftists, is that the game is genuinely bad and borderline unplayable trash. In fact, when you look at the history of the game development company, what kind of games they have made in the past, they have all been complete unplayable garbage.
What they have done here is the classic fraud: Create beautiful-looking screenshots, and highly polished and scripted teaser trailers that give the appearance of a really high-quality well-made triple-A game, raising a lot of hype for the game... when in reality that's just window dressing and the actual game is complete unplayable garbage that not even woke urinalists are willing to defend.
So what's with that excuse for not publishing on PC? Well, some are surmising that they have gone PS5-exclusive because they know that their game is trash, and the PlayStation is currently the only platform where players cannot get refunds for games. So they came up with this completely contrived and idiotic excuse for why they aren't publishing on Steam (where most people would just refund the game once they see how utter garbage it is.)
Anyway, I genuinely believe that this is a case of incorrect blame being put on the company. I don't see any evidence that they are "woke". The only thing they are guilty of is publishing complete garbage and trying to fool people into buying it with pretty screenshots and highly polished trailers, in a platform that offers no refunds.
