Theresa May surprised even me about Brexit

Theresa May, the current Prime Minister (as of writing this at least) of the United Kingdom, was a "remainer" (ie. she did not want the UK to leave the EU) before she became Prime Minister.

When the Brexit poll results were settled, at first she seemed to go along with it quite nicely, giving strong motivational speeches about how the United Kingdom will respect the voice of the people, and how the country will be stronger than ever, and has nothing to worry about.

That was either a facade, or she somehow changed her mind, because in the subsequent years she seemed to reverse her policies pretty much completely. Rather than taking a firm decisive stance on Brexit and quickly make it a reality, as she had promised in her initial speeches, the excuses and the endless delays started appearing instead. Delay after delay after delay. The narrative changed quickly from a "hard Brexit" into a "soft" one... to be done in two years... or four... or six... or something.

I have predicted several times in this blog that Brexit will actually never happen. The UK government will come up with excuse after excuse, and delay after delay, and hold on forever.

However, Theresa May one-upped me on this. She actually went even further and did something I couldn't predict.

She has now made a proposal for a "soft Brexit" that's so "soft" that it isn't actually a Brexit at all. She actually wants to, in essence, have the UK leave the EU parliament... but keep the EU essentially ruling over the UK's economy, trade deals, and immigration and border control.

In other words, she's pretty much proposing the exact opposite of what the people wanted. The people wanted the UK to become independent from the EU and its control, to be once again free to make its own decisions, and to close up and control its borders with respect to immigration. What she's proposing is to retain the control of the EU on the trade and immigration policies of the UK, while removing UK's own vote from these policies (because the UK would no longer be at the EU parliament), thus greatly weakening the powers and autonomy of the UK even further.

In other words, she's proposing removing the UK from being one of the "top four" leading countries of the EU, and become its vassal, subject to its laws, regulations and policies.

The Brexit supporters of the UK, including members of parliament, are classifying this as a complete betrayal of the people, and as of writing this these MP's are actually organizing a vote of no confidence against Theresa May. If it goes through, she will be removed from her position, and a new Prime Minister will be elected.

I hope they succeed. Even I couldn't have predicted this.
