The modern far left just loves their buzzwords. When they aren't inventing completely new words, they are taking existing words and appropriating them, changing their meaning, and using them quite liberally with zero regard to what those words actually are supposed to mean.
For quite some years now one of their top favorite pet words is "fascist". They just keep throwing that word at people, and literally do not care what the word is supposed to mean. They only care about the negative connotation it carries. They are pretty much in essence like little children who have learned a new fancy insult and are throwing it at everybody, even without knowing what the word is supposed to mean. It just sounds like an insult, and it carries a negative connotation, and that's all they care.
I am not exaggerating when I say that I have never, ever, not even once, seen any leftist define what that word is supposed to mean. Not once, ever. They just throw it around at everybody they don't like, but they never define what it's supposed to mean. Quite clearly they don't care what it's supposed to mean.
It's curiously rare to see anybody ask them for a meaning of the word. But the very few times I have seen being asked, the result is always the same: No answer. They just refuse to answer and just keep throwing insults and accusations, ignoring the question. I don't think they even have an answer.
Also, I'm quite certain that if they were asked the question in a setting where they feel compelled to answer, such as the exam of a university course about "social justice" and "intersectionality", you would probably get as many different answers as participants. They have no idea what it's supposed to mean, so they would probably just make something up.
In practice, to them it means "someone who doesn't agree with us, a persona non-grata, someone who is 'the enemy'." Which, of course, makes it a completely fluid and malleable word: A "fascist" is someone who disagrees with whatever happen to be the tenets of the far-leftist cult this particular week.
Quite literally and without exaggeration you could be "not a fascist" today and "a fascist" next week, without changing any of your opinions or stances on anything, simply because in that time another new idea starts making the rounds among the far-leftist crowd. Your opinions must always conform to the far-leftist doctrine, whatever it happens to be that particular day, changing on an almost daily basis to conform to all the new random ideas that have become popular among that crowd, or you'll be "a fascist".
And it's no exaggeration that the exact same opinion could be A-ok among the far-leftist cult today, and a horrible "fascist" opinion next week. That's not just hypothetical, it has happened several times, on a complete whim. (One very good example is the use of "sexual preference", which for decades was A-ok, but almost overnight became "fascist", because the leftist crowd just suddenly decided so, because some persona non-grata politician or someone used that term at some hearing.)
Quite ironically, holding an opinion that actual historical fascists strongly and openly opposed, could still get you labeled as "fascist" by the leftists, if they don't like that opinion. And they will be completely oblivious to the irony, and even if they knew of the contradiction they wouldn't care. They quite explicitly and literally wouldn't care (and would probably even say so out loud.) You are still a "fascist" because they say you are. No other argument needed.
But yeah, by being so broad and malleable in meaning, constantly changing its meaning, and being constantly used at random with complete disregard to any consistency or logic, completely disregarding what it's supposed to mean, it just has no meaning. When a leftist calls someone a "fascist", it doesn't mean anything. It's just an empty buzzword that just says "I don't like you", and that's it. They could just as well say that latter thing, and it would be the same.
Unfortunately society at large still hasn't really got that memo. In other words, that when leftist use that word, it means nothing. It's completely empty and devoid of all meaning. Unfortunately a very large portion of society still associates the word with its old meaning and takes it way more seriously than they should.
And that's the reason why they keep using the word. If the day ever comes that society at large actually disregards its meaning and the leftists stop getting the reactions they so much crave, they will stop using the word and move to something else.
