If you watch, for example, this video by the YouTube channel Team Skeptic, where the author comments on yet another "sovereign citizen" who is foolishly representing himself in court, you'll notice how, particularly in one part of the video, he again and again insists that he "doesn't understand anything". He uses lots of other words that mean the same thing, but he just outright refuses to say that he "understands" a single thing. He "comprehends", he "grasps", he "knows", he yada yada yada, but most definitely and categorically he doesn't "understand" anything.
This even though the judge quite clearly expresses that she herself doesn't understand why he is having such a huge problem with that word, and why he is playing that kind of word games. The judge makes it pretty clear that "understand" just means the same thing as to comprehend, to grasp, to know what's being said, there's nothing special about it. Yet, the sovcit just refuses to acknowledge that he "understands" anything. He is willing to use any other of a half dozen words that mean the same thing, but not that one.
This, of course, is part of the enormous sovcit conspiracy theory.
As I have written before, sovcits believe that, for some reason, the government, including judges, are secretly trying to trick people into submitting to the authority of the court, even if those people don't even know what's going on. And how are they trying to trick and fool people into this? By tricking them into using particular words with secret meanings, these meanings being unknown to the vast majority of people, and kept secret by the government.
In this case they have come up with this word play that "understand" means the same things as "stand under", and in this context it means "standing under" the authority of the government and accepting everything that's demanded by it.
Mind you, that meaning of "standing under" is 100% made up by the sovcit conspiracy theorists. It does not appear in any dictionary, it does not appear in any legal document, it does not appear in any law textbook, any statute, any law, any legal glossary, any documentation, any legal definition, anywhere. It's not taught in law school, or anywhere else.
Ironically, this secret meaning of the word is so secret that even lawyers and judges are not knowledgeable of it. (Or, perhaps, all of them are commanded behind the scenes to keep it a well-guarded secret and never to reveal it. Perhaps they are taught about the true meaning via word-of-mouth in some super-secret initiation ceremony. Who knows.)
This is not even a case of sovcits having taken a single word out of context and completely misinterpreting it (like they love to do). This is 100% their invention, based on literally nothing.
Sovcits honestly believe that if they refuse to "understand" anything that's said to them, in other words, to "stand under" anything, they can somehow game the system, use its own secret terminology, secret code, against it and use it essentially as a get-out-of-jail-free card. (Sovcit material actually and literally calls it a "secret code". Not even kidding.)
But like I wrote in that earlier post, I still don't understand (hah!) what exactly they think is happening behind the scenes. In other words, why do they think that judges need to trick and fool people like this? What happens if a judge fails to trick someone like this, fails to make the defendant say the magic words, but still pretends that the defendant falls under the jurisdiction of the court and convicts him?
Is there, like, some kind of super-secret entity behind the scenes punishing judges for failing to trick people like this, for sentencing people even when they didn't utter the magic secret words?
Even if they think there is such a secret entity, the question remains: Why? Why would even this secret entity bother? Why do judges need to go through this charade of tricking people into saying particular words? Why does this secret entity make sure that judges do that before they convict people? What for? If this secret entity is so corrupt that it has no qualms about judges tricking people without their knowledge, why would they have any qualms about also convicting those same people even when they don't say the magic words?
It just doesn't make any sense.
