Why a single-party state is a horrible idea

For many years now the Democratic Party of the United States, or at least a quite significant portion of their top members and congress representatives, have made no secret their open and blatant desire to completely eradicate the other major political party in the country, ie. the Republican Party. Many a Democrat politician and representative has quite openly expressed that all Republicans, very much including all Republican congress representatives, should be impeached, removed from their positions, thrown to jail, and the entire party destroyed and terminated, and every single position in government to be freed from them (to be replaced, rather obviously, by Democrat politicians).

In other words, for quite many years now they have quite openly expressed their goal to make the United States into a single-party state, where the Democratic Party is the only political party that controls everything, every single governmental position.

It shouldn't even be necessary to explain why a single-party state is such a horrible idea, and only leads to a disaster.

The main problem with a single-party state is that it completely undermines and removes the very idea of democracy, the very reason why democracy works as a system of government. It removes all accountability from the government by removing from the people the one tool they have to keep the government accountable for its actions and in check.

Namely: It removes the ability of the people to punish and replace the current government by voting for another competing political party. If there is no other party to vote for, then elections become meaningless and useless, and just a farce and charade. The single political party becomes an unaccountable totalitarian dictatorship which has no motivation nor incentive to do what's best for the citizens, and instead naturally becomes exploitative and tyrannical. They can get away with anything they want with no consequences, and the citizens cannot do anything about it via the democratic process, because the democratic process has essentially been killed and removed.

This exact thing has happened during human history, especially recent history, time and again. Basically the only thing that the citizens can do in this situation is to revolt and remove the government by force, and establish once again a democratic multi-party system of elected representatives.

Yes, multiple parties are an absolute requirement for a functioning democratic government. The more ideologically opposed these parties are, the better (perhaps somewhat ironically). That's because an ideologically strong opposition keeps the government in check. Not only does it challenge the government, it also works as a reminder to them that "if you don't do what's best for the citizens, you are looking at who they may vote for next time". Heavy ideological opposition keeps them in check and reminds them of who is actually in charge: The people.
