Political candidates have become crazy

For centuries, heck, millenia, for as long as there have been governmental elections of any kind (I'm sure since the times of the Roman Republic and even earlier), candidates have always tried to garner votes by promising things that benefit the people voting for them.

Of course for as long as this has been so, also the cliché has existed of the lying politician: Politicians promise everything between the Heaven and Earth, yet very rarely keep their promises (or keep them to the extent that was promised). But anyway, for pretty much as long as there have been elections there have been electoral candidates who promise benefits for their voters. Things that the voters will find beneficial.

One of the most common classical promises is, of course, the reduction of taxes (or, at the very least, the promise that taxes will not raise). Other classical promises seek to ensure and expand the freedoms and rights of the citizens, of the voters. Likewise the promises of protecting the citizens, not only in their freedoms and rights, but in their physical safety, eg. from foreign threats, as well as their economy and well-being.

The current cultural zeitgeist, however, has made especially the leftist politicians completely crazy. In many cases they are going the exact opposite direction and making political promises that will be against the interests and benefits of the citizens.

"Vote for me, and I will restrict freedom of speech, and criminalize the expression of opinions that are currently legal. Vote for me, and I will restrict your right of assembly, congregation and the press, and all your rights both in real life and online. Vote for me, and I will significantly raise taxes. Vote for me, and I will make sure that your tax money does not go to things that will benefit you or your family, but instead goes to provide for foreign nationals who do not pay taxes, and give them all the benefits that you have been enjoying so far. Vote for me, and I will make sure that millions and millions of foreign nationals will be free to enter the country with little to no restrictions, regardless of what they come here to do. You will be paying the bill with your tax money, not them."

These things are sold as good things. It's good to restrict freedoms, like freedom of speech. It's good to not only significantly raise taxes, but use that tax money for things that do not benefit the people paying those taxes, but foreign nationals who do not.

And the craziest thing is that people are actually voting for these candidates. They are voting for having their own freedoms restricted, and to pay more taxes, and for that tax money to be used for things that do not benefit them.

George Orwell predicted this. However, I don't think even he imagined how his predictions would come true.
