I have written before in more detail about the beliefs and bona fide conspiracy theory of the so-called "sovereign citizens" of the United States (although, as mentioned there, while they used to use that term to classify themselves for decades, in later years they have stopped using it and outright deny it because of the bad reputation, especially among law enforcement and the federal government. Their beliefs and tactics have not changed, though, just how they call themselves.)
One of the most hilarious beliefs that they have, which comes up oftentimes when they interact with cops, and which makes them sound outright bizarre, is that they believe that not only is the United States government a "private corporation", but that legally, secretly behind the scenes, every citizen is considered a kind of abstract "asset", a "corporation" of its own, that has a legal contract with this "private corporation" that's the government of the United States.
This belief exhibits itself in that many of them will use phrases like "I'm a living person", or "I'm a real person", or variants to that effect (sometimes even to such bizarre extents as for example "I'm a real breathing person with arms and legs", actual quote) when talking to cops, usually without any further explanation of what they are talking about.
This shows two delusional beliefs at the same time:
- As mentioned, the belief that secretly behind the scenes the US government treats citizens as abstract assets, as "corporations", rather than human beings, and
- that authorities, such as police officers, are aware of this and will understand what the person is saying when he says something like "I'm a living person".
So it's kind of a double whammy of hilarious delusion.
Of course in actual reality there is no such a thing happening behind the scenes, it's completely made up, and officials, such as cops, are not aware of any such thing because, rather obviously, this is not taught anywhere, it's not in any documentation or official learning material, and cops are not privy to this non-existent information, nor do they have any idea what that "I'm a living person" is supposed to signify (unless the cop happens to be acquainted with the details of sovcit beliefs.)
But it is perhaps precisely that second aspect that's the most hilarious part: They genuinely seem to believe that all government officials, including cops, secretly know all of this (even though none of them "spill the beans" ever), and will understand, acknowledge and respect what that "I'm a living person" is supposed to signify, even though in reality it just sounds completely asinine.
Indeed, they genuinely believe that there's a "secret code", certain words and expressions, that they can use to game the system, to tap into the secret system behind the outwards publicly shown one, and which all government officials are not only knowledgeable of but obliged to respect and obey. This is not just hypothesizing or reading between the lines: There are tutorial documents and videos made by sovereign citizen "gurus" who very explicitly talk about this, who very explicitly and directly talk about this "secret code" and the supposed terminology that can be used to tap into it and which government officials secretly know and acknowledge. And, of course, that "I'm a living person" (sometimes followed by "not a corporation") is part of this supposed "secret code", the secret vocabulary.
The funny thing is that they have developed this absolutely ginormous conspiracy theory with literally thousands and thousands of individual claims and beliefs, based only and solely on the misinterpretation of a half dozen individual sentences and even individual words found in a few legal and non-legally-enforceable governmental documents and (not legally enforceable) legal dictionaries. And that's no exaggeration: They literally base all of it on just a few individual sentences and words in a few legal documents (and, more precisely, on their misinterpretation of those words in those documents.)
