Do you know the old joke of "how do you know a politician is lying?", the answer being "his lips move". Well, that description pretty much describes Zohran Mamdani.
He is the recently elected mayor of New York City, who very prominently promulgates his socialist beliefs and run his campaign based on socialist ideas, promising his constituents that he would increase taxes for the rich and provide all kinds of free services to the citizens, like free bus transport and many other public services.
The majority of inhabitants of New York City are notoriously far-leftists for some reason, so unsurprisingly they voted for him and he got elected. Many big-name far-leftst New Yorkers are making victory laps and considering this a slap in the face of "maga" republicans and Trump.
What they don't realize is that they have just been bamboozled by a lying politician, by smoke and mirrors.
Taxes are statewide, and determined by the government of the state of New York. The city of New York is just that: One city in that state. Just because it happens to have the same name doesn't make them the same thing. And the thing is: The mayor of one city cannot mandate taxing rates, because taxes are at the state level, not at the city level, and one single mayor of one singly city has no say in this. It needs to be the Senate of New York state that decides on any tax changes.
And the funny thing is that the state senators have already communicated that they will not be increasing any taxes (because that would be economic suicide for the state).
And those free bus rides? Well, what do you know, the mayor of the city does not decide on that either. New Yorkers are not going to get their free rides.
However, there are many city policies that the mayor can influence and even decide. It's not hard to predict that all these will be detrimental to the economy of the city because as a staunch socialist they will be detrimental to rich people and companies. It has already been seen what those people and companies do when the government starts punishing them: They move out.
New York City has already been suffering economically for a decade. This isn't going to make things any better.
All I can say is: You get what you vote for.
