For almost a century South Africa was not just one of the richest countries in Africa, but in fact one of the richest countries in the world. However, it had quite a bad problem: Apartheid. An astonishing strict separation between white and black people, at all levels of society, and where disparity between the living conditions of the two groups was off the charts.
Apartheid was gradually ended, which in itself was a good thing. The problem was that it was, essentially, ended in the wrong way. Rather than starting over and building a new prosperous harmonious rich society that would keep the standards of living and economy of the country, black people have essentially taken over and are engaging in petty revenge against the "white oppressors" (which, of course, includes all white people the country regardless of what they may or may not have done.)
South Africa has become a warning to Europe about what happens when the country is suddenly flooded with millions of hostile (what pretty much in essence amounts to) immigrants. The new rulers have learned nothing from Zimbabwe, where this very exactly same thing happened, collapsing the entire economy of the country.
Just like happened in Zimbabwe, the South African government is destroying the economy of their own country just for petty revenge.
However, unlike Zimbabwe, South Africa has yet not collapsed even though they have been at it for even longer. How so?
The difference to Zimbabwe is that South Africa has vast industry run by the private sector, ie. private corporations, which still operate in the country and pay taxes.
The country is still holding on, barely, thanks to this. These private companies are, essentially, what is keeping the country from fully collapsing. (Pretty much any South African will corroborate this.)
On that note: Guess who is by far and large running and working for this private industry, the private companies, the factories, the manufacturers. Hint: By far and large not the native Africans.
However, there's only so much that the private sector can do to keep an entire gigantic country afloat. They will not be able to do that forever, especially given how hostile the government of the country is towards them, towards who owns and runs the private industry.
The time may well come soon when the South African government starts expanding their petty revenge quest from the farmers to the corporations, trying to take over, steal the factories just like they have done with the arable land, and try to run those factories themselves. And that farming land is a clear indication of what will then happen.
And then, the entire country will collapse. It's just a matter of time.
