For pretty much as long as humans have existed, who were able to communicate complex ideas with each other, there have existed "snake oil salesmen", people trying to sell other people panaceas, miracle cures for a wide range (if not all) diseases. All the way from very early prehistoric times to this day.
We may often think of these "miracle cures" to just be a thing of the past, but they are very alive and well to this very day. In fact, thanks to the Internet they are going stronger than ever. If you just do a bit of research you'll find tons and tons of people out there making wild claims about all kinds of substances and their purported ability to cure a wide range of diseases. Sometimes these substances are harmless so the only thing you'll lose is your money. Othertimes these substances can be outright dangerous and do real physical harm to you (such as bleach or black salve, both of which are being sold as "miracle cures").
And it hasn't always been just substances that have been sold as cure-alls, but also all kinds of dangerous medical procedures. We don't even have to go half a century into the past when lobotomies were being sold by a few doctors as miracle cures for all kinds of mental (and even physical) ailments, such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, sleeping disorders, concentration disorders and so on and so forth. And all kinds of such invasive procedures that supposedly cure a wide range of problems go all the way back, to trepanning, to bloodletting, and so on.
However, in the modern world one of the most heinous and destructive "snake oil panaceas" is being sold to thousands and thousands, tens of thousands of people. Hundreds of thousands of people. And what makes this especially heinous is that it's the mainstream medical community, especially in certain countries, that are promoting it and performing the heinous medical procedures.
And that's, of course, sex change surgeries.
And I'm not exaggerating when I say that they are indeed being sold, especially in the United States (and, sadly, in more and more western countries by the month) as "cures" for all kinds of mental ailments. Even extremely minor ones.
Especially in certain parts of the United States doctors are outright pushing sex change surgeries on minors, using the flimsiest of excuses, to "cure" even the most minor of problems. The doctors are looking for every possible excuse to suggest a sex change surgery to the young person and his or her parents. And in many cases not just "suggest", but very strongly push.
A teenager girl might feel a bit insecure of herself, and feel anxious and a lot of social pressure when dealing with her peers. She may get fits of anxiety and depression because she may feel that she doesn't "fit in" with the other girls. She might look at other girls, like schoolmates, and see them as happy, outgoing, open, always laughing, always telling jokes among themselves, displaying strength of character, always being sure of themselves, no hesitation, no shyness. Maybe this teenager girl gets intimidated by her peers and would want to be like them, but she doesn't know how to, she's shy, she's insecure, she doesn't know how to socialize in the same way as those other girls. Maybe she feels like she's "not normal" because of all this, that she doesn't belong, that she's not like the others, that she's a kind of outcast and a freak.
What she doesn't know (or can't believe) is that these kinds of feelings are completely normal and lots and lots of people feel them at one point or another when growing up, and for the vast, vast majority of people they resolve when they just live on, grow up, start getting more life experience.
But today, in some parts of the world, there are predators trying to take advantage of teenagers who are going through this phase in their lives. These predators are extraordinarily dangerous because they are in an extremely respected profession: They are certified medical doctors.
Suddenly these doctors start telling the teenager, and her parents, that there's an easy panacea, a snake oil liniment, that will resolve all of her issues and make all the problems go away in one fell swoop: She must become a boy! That will solve all of her problems! The reason why she feels that she doesn't belong, that she's not like other girls, is because she's not a girl at all! Become a boy and suddenly all problems will be solved!
If the parents disagree the doctors will start pressuring them: "Do you want a transgender son, or a dead daughter?" (Actual literal quote.) They will start scaring the parents about completely made-up suicide statistics of "transgender girls" who are not "affirmed".
The horrible thing is that the effects of the hormones are irreversible. The pitch of her voice will start lowering, and it will never come back up even if she stops the treatments. If the teenager is a boy, his breasts will start growing, and they will not go away even if he stops the treatments. And those are just two examples of such irreversible changes. They will also become sterile.
And if they go through the surgeries, they will have been physically mutilated for life, and there most definitely will be no way to go back. They will have a permanent injury that cannot be reversed, and they will never be a full person again, nor be able to live a normal life anymore, and they will have to live the rest of their lives with the consequences.
It's extremely similar to lobotomies.
My genuine wish is that 50 years from now society will look at these times in horror, in the same way as we today look back at the times of lobotomies and trepanning.
I also wish that all those predatory doctors have their licenses revoked and they are all put on trial for crimes against humanity.
