As a thought experiment, let's put ourselves for a moment in the shoes of a modern anti-racist intersectional feminist. Let's look at the world from that perspective.
We want all racism be eradicated from society. We want change. We want people and society to change. We want the old mentality to be eradicated, and a new mentality of tolerance, universal acceptance and diversity to become the norm. We want people to be educated into this. We want people to discard the old way of thinking, and become tolerant and accepting. We want people to stop being racists.
We hear of this old man, a government high-ranking elected official. A very old photograph of him, from something like 20 or 30 years ago, has surfaced, where he was being extremely racially insensitive, even back in those times. He was wearing blackface, alongside someone wearing a KKK white hood. Even 20 or 30 years ago, even considering the society of the time, this was extremely racially insensitive.
But today, the man has changed. He speaks positively of equality, tolerance, acceptance, and categorically rejects racism in all its forms. He admits that what he did back then was extremely stupid, and that he was young, naive and a fool, but he has learned how inappropriate and insensitive that was, and that he is not that person anymore, that he has learned and changed, and categorically rejects that mentality.
This is great! Right? Here we have a perfect example of someone who did have the wrong attitudes towards a serious subject, but has learned the lesson and become a better person. Our mission has worked beautifully. Our mission to change people's attitudes and thinking, our mission to make people reject the old racist ways, and become tolerant and accepting, and to support equality for all. This man has learned that those kind of things are not acceptable in modern society, and will never do anything like that. In the case of this man, our mission has been perfectly accomplished! This man should be lauded for having learned the proper progressive ways!
Right?
Wrong!
That's not how the regressive mentality works. That's not how the culture of offense by proxy works. Never forget! Never forgive! It doesn't matter what that man may be thinking today. If he did something like that 30 years ago, he's guilty of racism, and he will carry that guilt for the rest of his entire life! He cannot be forgiven! It doesn't matter what he does or thinks today, that one act is enough to eternally condemn him! Once a racist, always a racist.
What he says and does nowadays doesn't matter. He must be punished for that transgression of 30 years ago. He must be vilified, ostracized, shunned and not allowed to ever hold any position of power, or get any work, anywhere. One strike, no matter when it happened, and you are out! Forever! We do not forgive, ever!
I wish I were making that up, but as you might know (or guessed), it's based on an actual recent event. As always, the eternally offended want him gone for a transgression he did long ago, when he was young and stupid. They don't care what he says or does today. That one transgression is enough.
The regressive left is not about teaching and changing people. It's about oppressing people and gaining power. It's totalitarianism, and totalitarianism never forgives.
