"Refugees welcome" is the current narrative in leftist politics. All those poor innocent people in war-torn countries, whose homes are being bombed and destroyed, who are being persecuted and killed by war, should have a safe home here in Europe! They are suffering and dying, and we have to help them!
Except that's not what the leftists are actually doing. Leftists do not really care about refugees. How come?
There's only a limited amount of people that even rich European countries can take. It should be rather clear that if a country were to suddenly take a billion people, it would simply collapse economically. A country of some tens of millions of people simply cannot support a billion immigrants. That's a physical impossibility. Thus there has to be an upper limit, and the amount of immigration must be slowed down, so that the immigrants have time to integrate and support themselves before new immigrants are taking in.
Since there's only a limited capacity to take in immigrants, surely we should thus prioritize those who are actually in need of refuge? Those who would actually die if they aren't taken in? In other words, there should be a vetting process for refugees which corroborates that they are actually coming from those areas, and that they aren't just economic migrants from some other completely different place seeking for an easy life at the expense of taxpayers.
After all, if the vast majority of immigration is comprised of bums, those slots are away from the actual refugees, the ones who would actually need help to flee war and the danger of death.
But of course regressive leftists oppose any sort of vetting process. "Listen and believe" applies to immigrants as well: If an immigrant claims to be from a war-torn place, then that should be proof enough. No questions asked. Everybody should be taken in without question, and regardless of where they are from.
In other words, regressive leftists don't really care about refugees. They are just being hypocrites.
Some people call this "pathological altruism". I think a better term would be "fake altruism". They aren't doing it because of actual altruism, but because they want to virtue-signal (and also because they have been taught to hate their own country and culture.)
