I find it seriously worrying when even some medical doctors don't seem to have any problem with veganism, and seem to think and talk about it as if it were equally healthy (if not even healthier) as any other diet.
There are tons of misconceptions and outright lies that people have about veganism, which devout vegans are happy to to parrot.
For example, there's this conception that a vegan diet is somehow "natural" and healthy for us, and the way that nature "intended" us to eat. There may also be an implication (and some vegans might even make the claim outright) that many cultures in the past survived purely on a vegan diet.
This is absolutely untrue. Not a single civilization in the entire history of humanity has engaged in and survived on a purely vegan diet. Veganism is, in fact, a very modern invention. (In contrast, and somewhat ironically, there are many civilizations, especially indigenous ones, that have survived for centuries with an almost 100% carnivore diet, eating no or almost no plant food at all.)
The reason for this is that a human cannot survive and remain healthy with a purely vegan diet. This is because our digestive system literally cannot extract enough energy nor many necessary nutrients from unprocessed plant food. It is possible to live for some time with a fully (unprocessed) plant-based diet, but the more it continues, the stronger the effects of nutrient deficiency become. If it's continued for long enough, it will eventually result in death, for the sheer lack of particular nutrients that are necessary for survival.
The size of an animal's stomach as well as the length of the intestinal tract, in relation to body size, is directly correlated to how carnivorous that animal is. In other words, carnivorous animals tend to have a small stomach and relatively short intestinal tract, while herbivorous animals have huge stomaches (and sometimes even several ones) and extremely long intestinal tracts (in relation to body size). Carnivorous animals, like lions and dogs, have quite small stomaches and short intestines, while herbivorous animals, like cows, have huge (and several) stomaches and extremely long intestines.
Unsurprisingly omnivorous animals (such as bears and humans) have a stomach size and intestinal length somewhere in the middle of the two extremes. In humans, these measures lean more towards the carnivorous (ie. smaller) sizes rather than the herbivorous ones.
This not only indicates that we have evolved mostly eating meat, but it also means that we literally do not have the digestive system capable of surviving on a purely herbivorous diet. We have the capability of digesting plant food, but it's not enough on its own.
This is not just speculative and theoretical. The vast majority of people who are indoctrinated into becoming vegans quite quickly start noticing the side effects of malnutrition.
Before:
"But there are many vegans who look completely healthy, and may even be very fit and muscular, outright bodybuilders!"
Yes, there exist some vegans out there that appear to be healthy and fit, and who do not seem to present any of the symptoms of malnutrition.
However, if you dig a bit deeper you'll usually find out that their home is full of dietary supplements. In other words, highly processed and concentrated nutrient extracts.
The fact is that in order to get enough of several nutrients (such as proteins and several vitamins), you would need to eat so much of certain plants that it's physically impossible. Kilograms and kilograms every day. You just can't physically eat and digest that much. Thus these vegans get around it by using extracts, in other words, pills that contain proteins and vitamins extracted from these plants.
Extracted using very industrial and artificial means, and a lot of nasty chemicals in the process.
Hardly sounds very "natural", does it?
The thing is, if you eat normal varied traditionally healthy food, you don't really need to care about getting all necessary nutrients. However, if you eat 100% vegan, now you need to start worrying about it, as you need those supplements or else you'll get malnutrition.
And that's one of the dangers of veganism. People are being indoctrinated into becoming vegans, and nobody is warning them of the health effects it may have, or the extents to which they have to go to try to avoid those negative health effects. Thus, time and again vegans find themselves with all kinds of side effects, like above.
In some cases it can go so far as having to be hospitalized.
I think it's extremely irresponsible for some doctors to promote veganism (or at least not warn about the dangers).
