No, that's not hyperbole, or an exaggeration. I seriously recommend reading these two articles thoroughly:

And, as pointed out by the articles, this is not just some fringe individuals, or some fringe faction within the organization, disowned by the organization at large. No, the mass extermination of pets is a core goal of the PETA organization, and they will resort to lying and kidnapping of pets to do it, while publicly pretending to oppose the killing of animals.
The members of PETA are absolutely psychotic. For example consider this testimony from an ex-employee, given in the article above:
There are even more stories in those articles. Like PETA members convincing a veterinarian that they will find a home for a group of kittens, just to kill them in their van mere minutes later. Or other members going to someone's home, stealing their pet dog from their yard, and killing it. What kind of psychopaths do this kind of thing? This is not only horrendous, in many cases it's highly illegal.
And the most horrific thing about this is that they are donated tens of millions of dollars every year, by people who have absolutely no idea what they are actually doing.

The members of PETA are absolutely psychotic. For example consider this testimony from an ex-employee, given in the article above:
I did witness [PETA] bring back a pit bull to the Norfolk location. This pit bull was wagging its tail, jumping (an obvious friendly dog; not feral) while receiving praise, treats and getting pet by the [two PETA] employees. It was the end of my shift, so I was cleaning and restocking, which required me to go into their shed for supplies. I saw the [two PETA] employees take the pitbull into the shed’s euthanasia room, which is inside this shed. It is a small room where they have a table and a huge walk-in freezer with [four] large trash cans. The trash cans contained deceased animals and were usually full. As I continued to do my job, I heard the [PETA] employees talking to the dog and trying to calm it down as it whined. Later … they opened the door and I saw the pit bull deceased on the table.A psychopath is incapable of empathy and pity. What kind of psychopath does somebody need to be to murder a completely healthy happy playful dog?
