While theoretically there are multiple political parties in the United States, it's nevertheless a de facto two-party goverment, with the Democratic and Republican parties controlling the vast majority (and often all) of congress, and every single president having been of one of the two parties.
These two parties have always disagreed on many key issues, but there's one issue they have both always agreed on, since very long time: Tough immigration policy enforcement. Meaning enforcing a strong border security, stopping people from entering the country illegally, and deporting those who have succeeded in doing so.
Every single president and presidential candidate from both parties have always had that as one of their main policies. Including very much all the Democratic Party candidates and presidents. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton... all of them. Stronger border control and deportation of illegal immigrants was one of their main policies, both during their presidential campaigns and in office. (There are compilation videos out there of many of their speeches making it crystal-clear what their policies on this subject were, and it has always been pretty much unanimous: Stronger enforcement of immigration laws, stronger border security, more efficient deportation of illegal immigrants. All of them directly and unambiguously stated these policies.)
That's up until about 2016, after which Trump Derangement Syndrome hit all of them very hard, and most of them reversed this policy completely. Even big-name Democratic politicians (such as Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, among many others), who merely months prior were talking about stronger enforcement of immigration laws and border security... suddenly made a complete 180, and are now talking about pretty much the exact opposite, with the worst of them saying that immigration policy enforcement and border control should be removed completely. Seemingly just to oppose Trump.
"Abolish ICE" (the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency) is becoming more and more popular of a policy among these Democratic politicians with Trump Derangement Syndrome.
I think this can be dangerous. Not only for the United States, but the entire world.
The worst case scenario that I can imagine is a Democratic candidate becoming president and starting to apply all this regressive leftist rhetoric, with ICE indeed abolished, and border control completely removed, with an ensuing unrestricted mass immigration, with no limit. This will probably result in complete chaos, perhaps some form of civil war, and an economic crisis of unprecedented proportions.
The reason why this concerns the rest of the world as well is because the United States is an economic powerhouse, and if the country goes into a bad economic crisis, it will drag the rest of the world with it (it has happened many times in the past). That's just how international economics works.
The only hope I see in this is if a Democratic candidate ever wins the presidential election, he will once again make a 180 degree turn, ignores his own hypocrisy, and does not start removing the borders of the country. Or, at the very least, some kind of half-way compromise.
