Regarding my previous blob post about "monopolies and the modern political climate", I suddenly came to a realization: The dozen-or-so Silicon Valley giant tech megacorporations and banking companies (most of which are headquartered within the same city, and routinely collaborate and collude with each other for political goals) that control 90+% of all internet traffic and online social media, have more power than the government itself.
After all, consider that:
- The government cannot silence you, censor you, or ban you from a public forum because of a political opinion. These corporations can.
- The government cannot stop you from engaging in freelance journalism. These corporations can.
- The government cannot stop you from disseminating your opinions to a willing audience. These corporations can.
- The government cannot stop you from engaging in legal business transactions, or from receiving donation money from willing donors. These corporations can.
- The government cannot compel your speech (ie. force you to say certain things, or say them in a certain manner) by punishing you if you do not comply, nor can the government punish you for "offending" someone's feelings. These corporations can.
And by "can" I don't only mean "are capable of", but "are allowed to". Because they face no repercussions from this, and are free to do so as they see fit.
Even worse, the United States government cannot do any of the above to citizens of other countries. These corporations can!
It's actually amazing how much more powerful these private corporations are, and how much more control they have, than the government. And nobody elected these corporations and the people running them for this quasi-governmental position. They essentially form an undemocratic unelected oligarchy of totalitarian tyrants, which the actual government is pretty much powerless and unwilling to do anything about.
