Since 99% of the political posts that I write in this blog are highly critical of the modern far left and their ideology, one might easily get the impression that I'm a staunch "far right" ultra-conservative American Republican.
Well, I'm not. There are many things I don't agree with American conservatives. And just to demonstrate that, here's one example:
I was recently watching some YouTube video (by a right-leaning conservative) that discussed the threat and danger of the American government taking over, restricting and censoring all the big social media platforms, to silence dissent.
Unsurprisingly in the comment section there were several comments along the lines of: "Thank God we have the Second Amendment."
I selected one of those comments and asked the author how exactly their beloved Second Amendment would help stopping the American government from censoring and restricting social media. How exactly is the author envisioning that happening? What would be the logistics behind it? What exactly would the people do to stop it, using the Second Amendment?
As you might guess, I didn't get an answer to my question. Instead, I just got mockery, name-calling and accusations of being a leftist (which is particularly hilarious). Not even a single mention, not even in passing, of how the author envisioned the Second Amendment helping stopping such actions by the government.
Well, color me surprised.
Of course the reason I didn't get an actual answer to my question is that there is no answer. There is no conceivable rational way that unrestricted private gun ownership could somehow stop the government from censoring the internet in some manner. There just isn't. What exactly are these people suggesting? That conservatives will raise up and storm governmental buildings assault rifles in hand, to force the politicians to reverse their decisions? Rather obviously that's not going to happen. Even American conservatives aren't that stupid.
But otherwise this is one of the stupidest arguments you see all the time in the comment section of videos by American conservatives (and people from elsewhere who align politically).
You can present all kinds of arguments and defenses to why the Second Amendment is important and crucial, but this isn't one of those. It's a completely idiotic thing to say.
