For some reason many people in the United States have been recently panic-buying gasoline.
Having a reserve of something important isn't in itself a bad thing. The problem with gasoline in particular, however, is that it's a quite dangerous substance to be stored for long periods of time somewhere in your house. Most importantly it needs to be stored in very airtight containers or else it will start to evaporate, which not only will cause you to lose the gasoline, but could in fact be very dangerous if it were to ignite for any reason.
However, that's not the reason I'm writing this. The reason is the utter and sheer ignorance and stupidity of some people. These people are allowed to have driving licenses and drive cars around, when they don't have even a grade-schooler's grasp of what kind of substance gasoline is, and how it behaves.
Consider, for example, this person hoarding gasoline... in a plastic bag:
Can it get stupider than that?
Or this person collecting it in... open plastic containers:
The thing with gasoline is that when in contact with air, it evaporates very quickly. If you put gasoline in an open container of that size, it will be completely gone in a few hours, if not even faster. (The fast evaporation of gasoline is actually one of the main reasons why it's such a useful and effective fuel, as this property is extremely useful and important in internal combustion engines.)
Of course the downside of this fast evaporation is not only that you'll be losing all that gasoline very quickly, but the fact that the fumes are really flammable (which is the whole idea of gasoline) and thus very dangerous. If the fumes were to ignite for any reason, you'll be in a world of trouble. The fumes aren't exactly healthy to breathe either (ostensibly these people are putting the containers inside their cars. And going inside these closed spaces with all those open containers of gasoline, which are evaporating very quickly.)
Have these people never seen the concept of a gasoline canister? They are quite cheap, can hold a quite good amount of gasoline, and are relatively safe (because they are airtight).
