The unintended consequences of social justice ideology on their critics

For many decades American conservatism and their extreme ideas were a bit of a joke pretty much everywhere else. Likewise Fox News was a complete joke, and widely considered laughably and ridiculously biased. Almost nobody outside of American conservative circles took either very seriously, often just dismissing them as silly at best, destroyers of the world at worst (mainly due to their anti-environmentalist ideology and "gun ho" attitudes).

I have noticed that this has been slowly changing, and the main reason is the exponential escalation of the influence of the regressive leftist social justice ideology.

The identity politics and totalitarian ideology of the regressive left has become louder and louder by the year, and affected more and more of the politics of almost all western countries, with more and more totalitarian measures being taken. Their rhetoric, which just a mere 10-20 years ago was just extremely fringe, has become mainstream, and big media platforms, corporations and governments just can't stop spouting it, and enacting rules and legislation that's eroding people's rights and freedoms at an ever-accelerating rate. More and more is this ideology being taught to schoolchildren and even kindergarteners, even against the will of the parents, often secretively without their consent and even knowledge. In more and more countries are people being fired from their jobs and even put in jail for simply expressing their opinion, if it doesn't conform to the social justice ideology.

Thus, suddenly, in a matter of just a few years, American conservatives, and even Fox News, don't sound so laughable anymore. Suddenly they are the only voice of reason left in the west. Suddenly they are the only ones defending universal freedom of speech and equality, and opposing the totalitarian madness that's invading every aspect of society. Suddenly Fox News, who used to be the butt of jokes, has become almost the only credible and reliable news organization in the United States, and in fact much of the west. We live in a bizarro world where Fox News, of all news organizations, is the most reliable source of unbiased information.

I have noticed that this is having some unintended consequences on many people who are critical of the social justice ideology: They are being more and more attracted to and enticed by American conservatism and their ideas.

All of their ideas.

American conservatism is not perfect. They are very right on some things, and very wrong on others. Just because they are on the right side of history when it comes to the social justice ideology doesn't mean that they are right about everything.

However, people who are completely fed up with the totalitarianism of the social justice ideology are finding American conservatism more and more palatable. All the rhetoric of conservatives are starting to rub off on them.

I have seen many examples of this, both online and offline. But perhaps no better example of this is one of my best real-life friends, who is very much a critic of the social justice ideology... who has become somewhat of a climate change denialist.

Mind you, he's not stupid. He's extremely smart. He's highly educated and has a ton of experience on programming, electronics and other such subjects. He does those things as his profession, and is very good at it. He's not just some random redneck with the intelligence of a cactus. Yet he has become somewhat of a climate change doubter.

The American conservative rhetoric has started to rub off on him. Things that he would have laughed at 10 years ago, he's starting to take seriously. I'm certain this is a side-effect of the escalation of social justice ideology.

As said, this is not the only example of such things (not just relating to climate change denialism) that I have seen.

This is a psychological phenomenon that's hard to overcome. When the rhetoric of a particular group starts being palatable and reasonable... people are enticed to believe everything that group says. Suddenly everything starts sounding more credible and palatable, no matter how wrong it might be.
